Main Summary

A Day" is a beautiful poem which is written by Emily Dickinson, a famous English poet. She has used different imagery and symbols to describe a beautiful day. This describes the rising of the sun, what happens after it rises, and what happens after the sun sets. A thin ribbon of light descends from above the steeple. Upon hearing of the sun rising, the news spreads or the light rays travel like the squirrels running to get away. Sunlight removes the dark from the hills and a bobolink, a tiny American bird, sings in the lovely morning. When the sun shines, it makes everything and everyone happy and comfortable. In order to ensure that the sun will rise with lovely and wonderful rays, the speaker speaks to himself. Sunrise is confirmed by attractive scenery, shinning hills, and the singing of the bobolink. The speaker lacks confidence in his description of the sunset. When the sun goes down, the sky begins to yellow, and it continues to yellow until the sky is totally black. There is a golden -faces to the boys and girls as they return to their houses. The grey-suited caretaker/father waits for the children to return. He opens the gate and allows the youngsters in, allowing other children to enter their home.

The main theme of A Day poem

'A day' poem deals with the theme of birth and death. Here, the rising sun symbolises birth and the sunset symbolises death. As soon as a child is born, he/she grows up very fast and gradually starts to understand various responsibilities, just like we get busy during the day. So, one can say that the most important theme of the poem is the journey of life from birth to death. Death and birth are the main themes that are thoroughly discussed in this poem.

Answer the following questions.

a. How does the poet describe the morning sun in the first stanza?

In the first stanza of this poem, the speaker describes the rising sun in the early morning. The first beautiful golden rays of the sun extend like ribbons around it. It makes everything bright and visible. It changes the colour of the steeple into amethyst(white colour).

b. What does the line ‘The news like squirrels ran’ mean?

The line "The news like Squirrels ran" in the first stanza means that the news of the rising of the sun along with the starting its ray spreads as fast as squirrels run. The news of the arrival of the sun on the horizon is compared with the quick running of the squirrels using the word "like".

c. What do you understand by the line "The hills untied their bonnets"?

Before the sun rises, the hills are sunk in the bonnet of darkness. After the sun rises, all the hills look beautiful in fine green colour. The hills throw away their bonnets(darkness) when they are touched by the first rays of the sunlight. The hills are personified in this line as they untie their bonnets like women.

d. Is the speaker watching the morning sun? Why? Why not?

Yes, the speaker is watching the rising sun. The speaker is observing the change in colour of the steeple into amethyst, untied bonnets of the hills. He is also listening to the singing of the beautiful bobolinks and all these events confirm that the speaker is watching the morning sun.

e. How does the sun set?

Actually, the speaker is unknown to the setting sun. She doesn't know where the sun goes after its sets. The purple and yellow colours indicate the setting of the sun, but she doesn't know what happens after it because of the lack of knowledge about the sunset.
